Paddy by Donnacha Dennehy

Introducing a piece that few of us know, but probably should: Paddy by Donnacha Dennehy.


Scores by Dennehy have been said to be so clear and well written that they look deceptively simple. Yet when you hear this music, simplicity was clearly not a priority.


Paddy (2003) is a masterful display of timbral layering and rhythmic phrasing that can provide a great challenge to a soloist or ensemble. Characterized by its busy textures, metric modulations and pipe melodies, Paddy has a strong post-minimalist sound as the themes slowly develop in ecstatic repetition.
