Savino by Derek Tywoniuk

May 28, 2016

Co-commissioned by Brandon Ilaw and the ZMF in 2015: a new work for marimba and tape…

Derek Tywoniuk’s Sevino is set to NY Sen. Diane Sevino’s 2009 speech on Marriage Equality. The piece is unique in concept and interpretation. In setting the music to a senator’s floor speech, Tywoniuk offers marimbists and listeners a unique connection to the deliberation involved in America’s political process.

The piece spins a colorful, outside-mallet melody to the senator’s words, using chords and accents to punctuate the phrasing of Sen. Salvino’s cadence. Along with her powerful delivery, Savino’s hard-nosed attitude is captivating and entertaining.

Tywoniuk’s compositions showcase a wide variety of styles—from the sinking toll and lament of Wakarimasen to the mixed meter groove of Chain Reaction, the latter written for his classical/jazz crossover trio The Upside. A comparison of “For Dean Primmer” against “Salvino” is telling of his multi-faceted style of solo marimba composition.

Performed by Brandon Ilaw, video by Joe Bricker.
